Medication-Assisted Treatment for Opioid Addiction
Medication-assisted treatment is widely recognized as one of the most effective forms of opioid use disorder treatment because it addresses the condition on multiple fronts at once by pairing FDA-approved medication with professional counseling to support healing of the whole person. At Augusta CTC in Augusta, Maine, we use methadone as our primary medication.
When someone uses opioids regularly, their brain and body adapt to the presence of the drug, leading to physical dependence. Stopping use abruptly typically triggers withdrawal, which is a difficult and often distressing experience. Opioid withdrawal symptoms can include things such as:
- Stomach pain and abdominal cramps
- Nausea and vomiting
- Aches in the muscles and joints
- Severe anxiety and restlessness
- Difficulty sleeping
- Irritability and agitation
- Episodes of paranoia
For many people, the urge to relieve these symptoms by returning to opioid use is what keeps them caught in the cycle of addiction. Methadone, when taken as prescribed under medical supervision at our clinic in Augusta, stabilizes the body’s chemistry so that withdrawal symptoms subside without the highs and lows that are associated with illicit opioid use.
Cravings are another major obstacle to lasting recovery. Even after withdrawal symptoms ease, the pull toward using opioids can remain intense. Methadone helps reduce those cravings, giving patients the mental and emotional space they need to focus on rebuilding their lives. Combined with individual and group therapy, this medication becomes part of a broader plan for long-term recovery.
Admissions Process at Our Opioid Addiction Treatment Clinic
Patients can start the admissions process at our Augusta, Maine, methadone clinic by calling us or by simply walking into our treatment center on weekdays from 5-8 a.m. We recommend bringing a photo ID and insurance card if possible. However, if you do not have either of those things, don’t let that stop you from coming.
Choosing to seek opioid addiction treatment is a courageous step, and the team at Augusta CTC is committed to making sure that your first experience with our program is welcoming and supportive. From the moment you walk through our doors, you will work with professionals who will treat you with the dignity and respect you deserve.
Before entering our MAT program, every potential patient is screened to determine whether the services we offer at our methadone clinic are the right fit. They then complete a biopsychosocial assessment with one of our qualified counselors, and the results of that assessment help with the creation of the person’s individualized treatment plan. The assessment also evaluates any risk for harm to self or others, identifies treatment needs, and outlines appropriate clinical interventions, including the use of medication.
Following the assessment, patients meet with a medical provider for an initial physical exam and medical intake. Patients are asked to provide bloodwork and complete TB testing. Our medical staff, which includes nurse practitioners, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and a medical doctor, then determines the most appropriate starting dose of medication. Throughout your time in the program, our clinicians will regularly monitor how the medication is working and make any adjustments that may be needed.
Comprehensive Counseling Services
Counseling is a central part of every person’s treatment plan at Augusta CTC. Patients participate in both individual and group therapy sessions, which are led by credentialed clinicians, including certified clinical supervisors, licensed alcohol and drug counselors, and certified alcohol and drug counselors. Peer recovery coaches are also part of our care team, offering lived-experience support and professional guidance.
Group therapy provides a setting where patients can connect with others who have firsthand experience with the challenges of recovery. Sessions are facilitated by qualified staff and explore a wide range of topics, including:
- Relapse prevention
- Coping skills
- Anger management
- Self-care
- Healthy relationships
- Myths about methadone
- Codependency
- Balancing life and recovery
- Overcoming stigma
- Overdose prevention
- Harm reduction
We also offer specialized groups for pregnant patients, as well as HIV and hepatitis C education and prevention groups. Beyond the clinical benefits, these group therapy sessions help patients build a support network of peers they can lean on long after their time in our care has come to an end.
Individual counseling sessions are private meetings between a patient and a counselor. These sessions give patients the space to talk through personal concerns, work through fears, celebrate progress, and develop practical coping tools that can protect against relapse. Sessions are scheduled monthly, with additional appointments available whenever a patient wants or needs them.
